Description

Scotch Broom-Cytisus scoparius 'Burkwoodii' Blooms Bright Red/yellow then to Maroon/purple Zone 5

  • Common Name Burkwood's Broom, Scotch Broom
  • General Description Scotch broom is a deciduous shrub native to Europe but naturalized in the western United States and other areas outside its native range.
  • In the spring time it is known for its profusion of large, fragrant, pea flowers
  • Named for its numerous, bright green, upright-arching branches and stems that resemble sweeping-brooms.
  • Burkwood's broom is a fast grower that produces sprays of yellow and rose shaded flowers that mature to burgundy from late spring to early summer.
  • They begin bright red with whispers of yellow then darken to maroon and purple-burgundy.
  • It is highly attractive to bees.
  • Hairy-edged olive-green seed pods ripen in fall, then turn black in winter.
  • Scotch broom selection 'Burkwoodii' is very drought tolerant and excels in a well-drained sandy soil, although heavier soils curtail self-seeding.
  • Plant as a specimen in large containers or in mixed borders, or use as a hedge on top of steep slopes and rough banks growing 3-6 feet tall and wide.
  • Flowers sprays also make nice cut-flower arrangements.
  • Tolerant of wind, seashore conditions, and infertile soils.
  • Zone: 5
