Kiwi 'Tomuri' is a late flower male. 'Tomuri' is the best pollinator for the low chill female Kiwi 'Vincent'. This pairing is excellent for low chill areas where many other kiwis will not produce. One male kiwi plant can pollinate approximately 8 females, however planting one of each in a pot makes it easy for the end consumer. These fuzzy kiwi's both have attractive fuzzy green looking foliage. Actinidia deliciosa 'Tomuri' (Male) (Kiwi Fruit) - A vigorous-growing, deciduous vine with large rounded leaves on stems that can spread to 30 feet wide. The creamy white flowers in spring age to buff. The cultivar 'Tomuri' is the pollinator for female cultivar 'Vincent', a fruitning (female) kiwi vine that has a low chill requirement. One male plant can pollinate up to 8 female plants if centrally located. Plant 1 male to every 3-4 females if planting along a fence. Plant in full sun or partial shade with regular irrigation. Hardy to around 10-15° F and fruits best when winter temperatures drop to below 32° F. Our plants produced from tissue culture by Monrovia Nursery. This plant is also called the Chinese Goosebery and gained the more common name Kiwi Fruit through the great marketing efforts of New Zealand farmers who first popularized this fruit. This description is based on our research and our observations of this plant growing in containers at our nursery, in our own garden and in other gardens. We always appreciate receiving feedback of any kind from those who have any additional information about this plant, particularly if they disagree with what we have written or have additional cultural tips that would aid others growing Actinidia 'Tomuri' (Male) .

The Nutritious Superfruit!

Goji Berry Lycium barbarum Shrub

Top of Form

Lycium barbarum

Loaded with antioxidants, protein, and vitamin C.

Amazingly nutritious and so easy to grow, this vining shrub is finally making inroads in American gardens. Goji Berry has been a staple of Far Eastern diets for many years, but the antioxidant-rich, protein-intensive berry is now coming to our plates . . . via an easy, fast-growing vining shrub in the sunny to partly shaded garden!

Goji Berry has been called a superfruit because it so rich in health benefits. Nearly 13% protein, it is also very high in vitamin C, and is a powerful antioxidant. Eaten fresh from the vine or dried and then cooked, it has a pleasant, tomato-influenced tart flavor and herbal scent. The berries themselves are oblong (rather like olives) and orange-red, beginning green and then ripening and remaining on the plant from midsummer all the way to frost.

Native to the Himalayas, Goji is a quick-growing vining shrub that may take a season to establish in your garden. But once it makes itself at home, expect it to put on 4 to 5 feet of growth a year! With this in mind, you may want to prune it down to bush form, and then give it an annual late-winter "haircut." Or, if you prefer, shape it into a small single-stemmed tree. If this is too much bother, let it vine! Very versatile, it flowers and fruits generously in any form, but does much better with an annual pruning.

The flowers appear in early summer, white and lavender. They remain for a few weeks, soon replaced by masses and masses of berries. This plant is rather spiny, which discourages nibbling pests from eating the fruit. It should also discourage you from touching the green berries, which may blacken if they are handled!

Expect this shrub to reach 8 to 10 feet in a single season, or prune it smaller. It needs plenty of sunshine, but tolerates a bit of shade in warm climates. Good soil drainage is essential too. Other than this, Goji is quite carefree, ready to bloom and flower for many years to come! It is self-fertile, so you need plant only one. Zones 5-9.

Kiwi 'Vincent' produces excellent tasting, medium sized fuzzy kiwi's! 'Vincent' & 'Tomuri' make a excellent pairing in low chill areas & performs good up to zone 7. These fuzzy kiwi's both have attractive fuzzy green looking foliage.

Actinidia deliciosa 'Vincent' (Female) (Kiwi Fruit) - A vigorous-growing, deciduous vine with large rounded leaves on stems that can spread to 30 feet wide. The creamy white flowers in spring age to buff and are followed by tasty egg shaped fuzzy-skinned fruit in fall. The cultivar 'Vincent' is a fruiting (female) kiwi vine that has a low chill requirement. It needs a male cultivar to pollinate the spring flowers and we grow the male cultivar 'Tomuri' for this purpose. One male plant can pollinate up to 8 female plants if centrally located. Plant 1 male to every 3-4 females if planting along a fence. Plant in full sun or partial shade with regular irrigation. Hardy to around 10-15° F (Sunset zones 4-9, 12, 14-24, 29-31 of USDA 8-10) and fruits best when winter temperatures drop to below 32° F. Our plants produced from tissue culture by Monrovia Nursery. This plant is also called the Chinese Goosebery. It gained the more common name Kiwi Fruit through the great marketing efforts of New Zealand farmers who first popularized this fruit. Farmers in New Zealand had been growing the plant since the early part of the 20th century but only after renaming it "Kiwi fruit" in 1962 did it get international attention. This description is based on our research and our observations of this plant growing in containers at our nursery, in our own garden and in other gardens. We always appreciate receiving feedback of any kind from those who have any additional information about this plant, particularly if they disagree with what we have written or have additional cultural tips that would aid others growing Actinidia 'Vincent' (Female)
